Induction Motor Control

An Induction Motor Control is used to control induction motors and is considered an intelligent control.  Based on artificial intelligence techniques, the induction motor control is a self-organizing system.  Motor control systems of this type have grown incredibly quickly with production of electronic circuits and microprocessors which offer operating speed and high computation abilities. 

Prior to the development of affordable electronics, it was difficult to control and vary the frequency of an induction motor, making its uses, at that time, limited.  Induction motor control is now a commonplace method of motor speed control for induction motors.

There are various Induction Motor Control devices which utilize techniques for variable speed drives.  Several of these induction motor control types have come to the forefront with advances in power electronic switch and microprocessors.  Each of these types offers their own benefits and advantages to meet the varied needs of induction motor control users.  Several of the most popular Induction Motor Control techniques are as follows:

  • Direct torque control – This Induction Motor Control technique is simple in that its basic configuration consists of DTC controller, torque and flux calculator, and VSI.  With the direct torque control method, one voltage vector and two zero vectors are selected in order to keep the stator flux and torque within a band.

  • Field oriented or vector control - This Induction Motor Control method controls the motor flux and decomposes the motor current into flux producing and torque producing components. These motor current components can be utilized separately, and brought together again to create the actual motor phase currents.  The benefits of the field oriented or vector control method are that they offer a solution to boost adjustment problems and offer better control of the motor torque which allows higher, dynamic, performance.

  • Sensor-less vector control – This Induction Motor Control method is utilized for both high and low speed ranges.  The stator terminal voltages estimates the rotor angular speed, rotor flux, and slip angular speed.  The advantages of the sensor-less vector control method Induction Motor Control is lower cost of drive operation, reduced overall drive size, elimination of the sensor cable, and increased operational capabilities.

A type of alternating current motor, an induction motor (also known as a synchronous motor), receives power via a rotating device utilizing electromagnetic induction.  Another name for an induction motor is a rotating transformer.  This is an applicable name because an induction motor has a stator on the primary side and a rotor on the secondary side.
