Motor Control Center

The Motor Control Center first became known, and established, in the power source arena in the 1950s, where it was used by the automobile industry for electric motors in cars.  Today’s modern Motor Control Center is an important component found in various commercial and industrial power source applications and is a piece of electrical equipment which can greatly enhance your own electrical requirements as well. 

As mentioned above, a Motor Control Center is utilized in various commercial and industrial applications.  These applications can also include the following categories:

Although it may appear to fall into the large-scale equipment category, a Motor Control Center can be installed virtually anywhere.  It is good to note however, that if the locale is particularly corrosive or dusty, the Motor Control Center is best housed in an air conditioned environment that is separate, but adjacent, to the machinery it is controlling.

What is a Motor Control Center and How Does it Operate?

A Motor Control Center is simply an assembly of several motor starters sharing a common power bus.  The assembly of motor starters that comprise the motor control center are typically used for alternating, 3-phase, motors from 230V – 600V.  There are also motor control centers which are designed to handle larger motors from 2300V – 15000V.  These larger voltage motor control centers differ slightly in that they utilize separated vacuum contactors for switching and control.

The actual structure of a Motor Control Center is typically a vertical, metal, cabinet(s) with a sharing power bus and capability to mount individual motor controllers via plug in mounting.  The individual motor controllers can be removed from their cabinets (if they are small in size) for maintenance and testing.  Larger motor controllers are often attached to their cabinet(s) in place.  Within each motor controller resides a contactor which protects the motor and fuses by overloading the relays or a circuit breaker which provides short circuit protection.  There is also a disconnecting switch which isolates the motor circuit.

The Motor Control Center enables field control and wire ways for power cables via 3 phase power.  Three phase power travels via separable connector’s and the motor is then wired to terminals in the controller. 

Individual motor controllers housed within a motor control center can carry arrange of optional features to enhance application requirements:  A few of these options include the following:

• Different types and classes of power fuses and/or circuit breakers.

• Different types of overload protection relays such as solid-state or bi-metal.

• Additional control terminal blocks.

• Separate control transformers.

• Control switches.

• Pilot lamps.
