Step Motor Control

A Step Motor Control is an intelligent device which allows a step motor to perform the primary tasks required of it while the Step Motor Control handles the operation and calculations the motor itself.   A Step Motor Control sends "pulses" and direction signals which are translated into phase currents which are appropriate for the step motor.

What is a Step Motor and How Does it Operate

When exploring a step motor control, it is helpful to understand the step motor itself.  A Step Motor Control has several characteristics which set is apart from other types of motors although it does share some similarity to a switched reluctance motor.  The step motor is a permanent, synchronous, electric, motor that is brushless.  It is hallmarked by the ability to create a large number of steps by dividing a full rotation.  This motor also offers precise control of the motor’s position without feedback mechanism. 

Step motors feature multiple tooted electromagnets which are energized by a step motor control.  These electromagnets are centrally arranged around a gear shaped piece of iron.  As the motor shaft turns, each slight rotation is called a “step,” and these steps are taken one at a time.  Steps occur when the gear’s teeth are aligned to one electromagnet and slightly offset to the next electro magnet.  When the gears rotate to align repeatedly, these steps are created.  An integer number of steps will constitute a full rotation.  Precise angles of the motor are achieved in this manner.  When stopped, step motors will inherently hold their position.

A step motor, when utilizing a Step Motor Control, is an extremely versatile positioning system.  Step motor controls are often part of an open loop, step motor, system.  Historically, they have been found to be less complex and more durable when compared with servo or closed loop systems.
