How a VFD Motor Drive Operates

A good example of VFD Motor Drives controlling speed and torque is with a 3-phase induction motor.  How  VFD Motor Drives control speed and torque is through magnetic interaction between and rotor and stator.  The mechanics of this involve the stator within which reside two pole pairs.  The pole pairs are wound in such a way as to provide a north to south magnetic field.

Isolated within the motor is one pole pair, while the rotor rotates at the base speed.  Speed is determined by the number of poles and the frequency applied to them.  In this scenario, an effect called slip can also occur.  Slip is basically the difference between the rotating magnetic field in the stator and the rotor speed and it is what allows a motor to turn.  An easy calculation for slip is as follows:

F = Frequency applied to the motor
P = Number of motor poles

The speed of the motor can be varied by changing the frequency applied to it.  VFD Motor Drives provide a variety of frequency outputs and at each given frequency output, a new torque curve is achieved.   We can conveniently adjust the speed of a motor by changing the frequency applied to the motor.
