What differentiates a VFD (variable frequency drive) motor from a VFD Rated Motor?  A VFD Rated Motor is otherwise known as an inverter-rated motor and there are specific physical characteristics which differentiate it from other types of motors.  The VFD Rated Motor was defined by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) in NEMA-MG Part 31, in which its requirements were documented.  The NEMA requirements address the issue of repetitive voltage spikes that can be magnified, creating repetitive stress on VFD motors.  Subject to these voltage spikes,  NEMA requires that VFD rated motors withstand 1600 V pulses with a rise time longer than 0.1 ms., as opposed to other types of motors with normal windings which are designed for voltages up to 600 V.

Voltage spikes that exceed the maximum create a situation where the VFD motor becomes more prone to break down and eventual burn up.  Voltage pulses and spikes ultimately degrade the insulation and reduce life expectancy of the motor.  Voltage magnification is due to a number of factors which include length of cable connections, the type of windings, and the type of insulation used. 

Many standard motors utilized windings with supplementary phase insulation that is coated with a very thin film of varnish covering.  The VFD Rated Motor windings are optimized, higher rated and insulated, copper windings.  Due to their unique windings, a VFD Rated Motor also has less probability of premature winding failure.
